The first obstacle I see facing in the “Exquisite Corpse Soundscape” is fighting the urge to make a rhythm or create a song-like format. John Cage's composition “4 ‘33” encourages us to break down noise by focusing on each individual sound. I want to make a composition of all the noises I hear from my apartment every night. I live on the hill on Broadway Street so there is constant commotion and chaos. Most people would not consider Boulder a city, but compared to the countryside, where I grew up, it feels like a bustling city. There are two categories; noise coming from the apartment and noise happening outside the apartment. There are usually gunshot noises from the Xbox game, as my roommates like to stay up late and play COD. My favorite, yet rare sound, is when my cat, Milo, meows. I tried my best to capture Milo, yet his cries were so sporadic that I settled for him bathing himself (I accidentally made an ASMR). I also want to capture the noise pollution coming from the traffic on Broadway Street. I thought I wouldn’t be able to fall asleep because of all the noises, but then I realized there are many noises from the countryside, too—it's just more subtle, natural noises. I compare the peepers’ (type of frog) croaks that I hear at home; there is a rhythm of croaks and every once in a while a frog will croak louder and longer- breaking the rhythm. Vehicle traffic is like the frogs; a constant rhythm of engines, except for the occasional man who feels like revving his engine extremely loud. I’m excited to put all the noises together!
