Artist Statement:

My zine explores self-expression through fashion, as I believe the way we dress often reflects how we are feeling through different chapters of life.

〜 Highlights 〜

The book cover has a model that loosely represents myself, wearing two of my favorite outfits from my wardrobe. The light pink and blue represent stereotypical gender colors, as the first outfit appears masculine and the latter more feminine.

Page with lake - Every summer, I return to Maine, where my family works at a summer camp. We must wear green and white uniforms, a tradition meant to help us focus less on appearance and more on genuine interactions with each other.

Page with Van Gogh’s The Starry Night - I struggle with depression and during these episodes, I can barely take care of myself, let alone change my clothes. Most people can relate to bed-rotting and turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms. Art is an essential therapy for me and often shines a light on my life.

I had a very difficult time brainstorming on how I was going to represent all the different versions of myself in just 12 pages. Once the lightbulb turned on, I realized that fashion was going to thread everything together. While working on this project, I developed my skills in Photoshop and Photo Illustrator. The collage style I chose allowed me to experiment with layers, brushes, and effects. The lasso tool and pen tool were my heroes! The Zine project allowed me to understand Visual Literacy as I mainly used images (as opposed to words) to communicate my thought process.
